Awakening at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Alvin Ailey Artistic Director Robert Battle’s first new work since taking helm of the dance company in 2011, Awakening is a groundbreaking piece. The moves are taut, almost ritualistic, balancing chaos with resolution and dissonance with harmony. John Mackey composed the new symphonic score, which, together with the dancing, seeks (and expertly succeeds) to balance chaos with resolution, and dissonance with harmony. The Alvin Ailey dance company is one of the country’s premiere dance troupes, and Congressionally-designated “vital American cultural ambassador to the world” that specializes in showcases African-American cultural uniqueness.
