At WestHouse Hotel New York, guests stay on West 55th Street in Midtown West, about a 7-minute walk from Fifth Avenue and around 4 minutes on foot from the Nordstrom NYC Flagship on West 57th Street. For a shopping trip to New York, that puts the city’s best-known stores within an easy walk in both directions.
Fifth Avenue’s main shopping stretch runs north from the mid-40s to Central Park, with more than 100 flagships, jewelers, and department stores along roughly three-quarters of a mile of sidewalk. It is busy year-round, and from late November it becomes the center of the city’s holiday season, with window displays, light shows, and the Rockefeller Center tree a few steps away.
Here is how to plan a day of Fifth Avenue shopping, from the flagships worth knowing to the holiday windows and the Midtown favorites close to WestHouse.
Where Is the Fifth Avenue Shopping District?
The luxury shopping corridor on Fifth Avenue runs roughly from 46th Street to 61st Street, along with 57th Street between Madison and Sixth Avenues. This is the area represented by the Fifth Avenue Association, which keeps a directory of stores, dining, and events.
The stretch splits naturally into two halves. The blocks around Rockefeller Center, from the late 40s to the low 50s, mix department stores, family favorites, and flagship versions of household names. North of 55th Street, toward Central Park and Grand Army Plaza, the avenue becomes more formal, with jewelers, fashion houses, and Bergdorf Goodman.
From WestHouse, the quickest way in is east along West 55th Street or West 57th Street, reaching Fifth Avenue in about 7 minutes. Many guests start at the top near Central Park and work their way south, ending near Rockefeller Center.

Fifth Avenue Flagships Worth Knowing
Fifth Avenue’s stores change often, with new flagships opening and older ones moving or rebuilding. These are some of the long-standing names along the avenue.
Bergdorf Goodman
The department store most associated with Fifth Avenue sits at 754 Fifth Avenue at 58th Street, with the men’s store directly across the avenue at 745 Fifth Avenue. Bergdorf Goodman is known for designer collections, beauty, and, each holiday season, some of the most elaborate windows in the city.

Best for: Jewelry, engagement rings, gifts
Apple Fifth Avenue
The glass cube at 767 Fifth Avenue, near the southeast corner of Central Park, leads down to one of Apple’s best-known stores. Apple Fifth Avenue is open around the clock on most days, which makes it an easy stop late in the evening.
Best for: Tech, late-night visits
Cartier Mansion
Cartier’s Fifth Avenue Mansion at 653 Fifth Avenue occupies a historic mansion at 52nd Street and is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm and Sunday from noon to 6pm. Its holiday decorations are one of the avenue’s best-known seasonal sights.
Best for: Fine jewelry and watches, holiday photos
Saks Fifth Avenue
The Saks Fifth Avenue flagship at 611 Fifth Avenue fills the block between 49th and 50th Streets, directly across from Rockefeller Center. Its holiday windows and light show are among the most visited sights on the avenue (see below).
Best for: Department store shopping, holiday windows
Louis Vuitton on 57th Street
Louis Vuitton’s longtime flagship at 1 East 57th Street is being rebuilt, and the brand’s temporary store is just along the street at 6 East 57th Street. Alongside fashion and leather goods, it houses Le Café Louis Vuitton and a chocolate shop from pastry chef Maxime Frédéric, for a break between stores. See LVMH for more on the space.
Best for: Fashion, a coffee or pastry stop
Harry Winston
The jeweler’s flagship salon at 718 Fifth Avenue has been in the same location since 1960, one of the avenue’s longest-running addresses for fine jewelry.
For Families: LEGO, Nintendo, and FAO Schwarz
The southern end of the shopping stretch is the most family-friendly. The LEGO Store at 636 Fifth Avenue has a Pick & Build wall, a Mosaic Maker, and a Minifigure Factory, and is open daily from 10am to 8pm. Around the corner, Nintendo New York at 10 Rockefeller Plaza, on 48th Street, is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm and Sunday from 11am to 7pm. FAO Schwarz, the toy store, sits at 30 Rockefeller Plaza on the 49th Street side.

Fifth Avenue at the Holidays
Fifth Avenue is busy all year, but the holiday season is when it draws the biggest crowds. Here is what is confirmed for 2026 so far.
Holiday Windows and Light Shows
Saks Fifth Avenue unveils its 2026 holiday windows and light show on Monday, November 23, 2026. Light show times for this season have not yet been announced. Last season, the show ran every 10 minutes from 5pm to 11pm through early January.
Bergdorf Goodman had not announced its 2026 window unveiling at the time of writing. Last year’s windows went up on November 20 and stayed in place through January 5.
Fifth Avenue’s windows are at their best after dark. A walk south from Bergdorf Goodman to Saks in the early evening takes in many of the major displays, with the light show at the end. For a wider holiday itinerary, our guide to Thanksgiving in NYC covers how the city moves into the Christmas season over that weekend.
The Rockefeller Center Tree
The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit on Wednesday, December 2, 2026, directly across Fifth Avenue from Saks. Pair a visit to the tree with the Saks light show for one of the most festive evenings in Midtown.
Holiday Markets Near Fifth Avenue
- The Holiday Shops at Bryant Park Winter Village run from October 28, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with more than 180 vendors beside the park’s free-admission skating rink. Bryant Park sits on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street, about a 19-minute walk from WestHouse.
- The Grand Central Holiday Fair runs in Vanderbilt Hall from November 9 to December 24, 2026, a short walk east of Bryant Park.
- The Columbus Circle Holiday Market, a few minutes from WestHouse at the southwest corner of Central Park, typically runs through December. Dates for 2026 had not been announced at the time of writing.
Car-Free Fifth Avenue
In recent years, Fifth Avenue has closed to traffic between 48th and 57th Streets for a Holiday Open Streets day in December, giving shoppers the full width of the avenue. In 2025, it ran on a single Sunday, December 14, from noon to 6pm. The 2026 date is usually announced in November by NYC DOT.
Black Friday and Holiday Weekends
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, with Black Friday on November 27. Fifth Avenue is at its busiest on Black Friday weekend and the Saturdays before Christmas. Weekday mornings, shortly after stores open at around 10am, are the calmest time to shop.

Midtown Favorites Close to WestHouse
Some of the best shopping near the hotel is not on Fifth Avenue at all. These are the closest options to West 55th Street.
Nordstrom NYC Flagship
The Nordstrom NYC Flagship at 225 West 57th Street, at Broadway, is the closest major department store to WestHouse. It spreads across multiple floors and is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 9pm and Sunday from 11am to 7pm.
Beyond the shopping, Nordstrom’s free Style Help service pairs you with a stylist with no obligation to buy, and the store also offers alterations and beauty services. When you need a break, Wolf serves Italian food and Bistro Verde sits on the fifth floor. Check Nordstrom for current hours and services.
Distance from WestHouse: about a 4-minute walk
Best for: Fashion and beauty under one roof, personal styling, a lunch stop
Tip: Visit on a weekday morning for a calmer start
The Shops at Columbus Circle
The Shops at Columbus Circle, at 10 Columbus Circle, bring together fashion, home, and specialty stores, including Williams Sonoma and Fleet Feet, overlooking the southwest corner of Central Park. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm and Sunday from 11am to 7pm, and pairs naturally with a walk into Central Park.
Distance from WestHouse: about a 7-minute walk
Best for: A rainy-day shopping stop, home and kitchen gifts
Further Afield: Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s
Two of New York’s best-known department stores sit beyond walking range of the hotel but are easy to reach. Bloomingdale’s 59th Street, at 1000 Third Avenue, is a short subway or taxi ride east. Macy’s Herald Square, on 34th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, is easily reached on the N, Q, or R from the 57 St-7 Av station at the corner of the hotel’s block, and its holiday windows are a season tradition of their own.

Tips for Shopping Fifth Avenue
- Clothing and footwear priced under $110 per item are exempt from New York State and New York City sales tax. Items at $110 or more are taxed at the full rate of 8.875%, as are jewelry and handbags at any price. See New York State Taxation for the details.
- Most Fifth Avenue flagships open at around 10am and close between 7pm and 9pm, with shorter Sunday hours. Holiday hours often run later, so check each store’s own site.
- Start early on weekends. The avenue is calmest in the first hour after opening and busiest from midday to early evening.
- Plan your route by block. Starting at the top near Central Park and walking south keeps the flagships, the holiday windows, and Rockefeller Center in one direction.
- Travel light and drop purchases at the hotel between stops. WestHouse is close enough to return between a morning on Fifth Avenue and an afternoon at Nordstrom or Columbus Circle.
A Shopping Trip With Nordstrom
For guests planning a shopping-focused stay, the Nordstrom New York Shoppers’ Package includes a $100 Nordstrom gift card at check-in, complimentary gift wrapping for your purchases, and free delivery to your room or any US address. A two-night minimum stay applies, and bookings must be made seven days in advance.
Make Time for The Terrace
A full day of shopping adds up to a lot of walking, which makes somewhere calm to return to worth planning for.
The Terrace is WestHouse’s private, guest-only space on the 23rd floor, included in your Guest Privileges. Start with breakfast there before the stores open, served from 6:30am to 10:30am on weekdays and 7am to 11am on weekends, then come back between 5pm and 8pm for tapas, desserts, beer, wine, and sparkling wine before heading out to see the holiday windows after dark.
Where to Stay for Shopping in NYC
For a shopping trip, the best base is one that keeps the main stores within walking distance, so you can drop off bags and head back out without relying on taxis.
WestHouse sits between Fifth Avenue and Columbus Circle on West 55th Street, with Nordstrom around the corner and Central Park South about 6 minutes on foot. Rooms and suites range from Two Queen rooms, with space for friends or family traveling together, to suites with a separate living area for longer holiday stays.
